Wings Overhead

Wings Overhead

A Poem by Susanna F
"

Ever had the feeling someone was keeping you safe?

"

I'll never forget the day

My grandfather had to go away

I cried then, as I tried to pray

And heard the sound of wings overhead.

Years later, on a warm, dark night,

A wicked-souled man did things not right

Though a child, I found the strength to fight

As I heard the sound of wings overhead.

When my mom left I was all alone

Caring for the family home

Just sixteen and barely grown

Glad I heard the sound of wings overhead.

I moved in with a friend, I believed

I guess that I was just deceived

But I found a home when she made me leave

Following the sound of wings overhead.

When I found the man I dreamed of

I knew that this was forever love

And we heard the wind rushing from above

With the sound of wings overhead.

This is a lovely poem that really captures your relationship with your grandfather. I don't know if you are currently religious but it sounds like he's in God's kingdom and looking down over you, guiding you as a gardian angel and thats really cool! Again, great piece

Sorry you had to go through what you did but to be open enough to recognize your grandfathers spirit is a blessing. You're very lucky and a good poet as well.

This a a wonderfully honest poem, some children have to go through so much in life, its so lovley when they find the strength to pull them selves through to the next chapter in their lives, and truly amazing when they learn to fly regardless of what lifes throws at them. Thank you.

Awww... The first word i could think of is "Cute". I love the repetition of the sound of wings overhead, it reinforces repeatedly the impact that this faith of yours has on you. Religious or not, you believe in something, and as you expressed in the poem it is obviously watching you. Second thought, maybe cute isn't the right word to use.... Sweet. That's a better word. And this poem is full of it. Favoriting, i just really like this. Not sure why completely. Its more than the fact that it was just really well written. It has that touch to it, a strong belief in something felt by the writer that can be also felt by the reader (not implying religious belief, but the belief in something.... idk the word). That's not an easy thing to accomplish, but you did it.

I haven't been religious in many years, but this is a feeling I just can't shake. Things could have been so much worse.
