Global Futbol Matches October 1st to 7th, 2018A Chapter by Steve ClarkThe following articles provide a summary of matches and tournaments after the 2018 Global Futbol World Cup.October 1st to October 7th
Qualifications
for various Men’s continental cups continued this week. Surprise wins included
Sweden away to France and Turkey against the Netherlands, with both scores 3-1.
Luxembourg scrounged out a 2-all draw against World Cup team Macedonia, while
Switzerland and England’s match saw a 6-goal draw. 2018 World Cup nation Libya
defeated their African World Cup rival Kenya in Nairobi, while Rwanda scored
away over Sao Tome and Principe. In the Americas, Colombia started their
campaign after their World Cup win with an away draw over Haiti. Argentina
could only manage two goals away to Antigua and Barbuda thanks to an Agüero
double. British Virgin Islands surprised Bolivia with a 1-nil win, with Bolivia
not working as a team, and their coach César Farías needing to find a way to
unite the team. Mexico also struggled against Cuba in Havana with a 1-1 draw.
Canada lost to World Cup side Guatemala at home, while the USA and Chile fought
a hard 1-1 draw, with Pinilla scoring late to ensure Chile came away with a
point. The
Women’s Nations Cup qualifiers returned after successful legal proceedings.
Sweden and Greece failed to score against Northern Ireland and Malta
respectively, while Ukraine and Russia posted 1-nil victories. In their first
game, Cyprus conceded five against Kazakhstan, while Norway poached a win over
Wales, despite Welsh goalkeeper O’Sullivan’s efforts. Belarus and Switzerland
traded blows before the game finished in an epic draw. The same can be said for
Estonia and Italy, where it was the substitutes that scored late to help Italy
first take the lead after trailing, before Estonian striker Tammik slotted a
goal in injury time to level the scores. Lithuania blasted Finland in their
opening game, scoring inside three minutes, while Potapova scored twice before
the half was over to ensure a solid win. Ireland scored twice in the second
half to defeat Slovakia and restore some confidence after their 4-nil loss to
England. Israel’s striker Shahaf netted a hat trick as they ripped the Czech
Republic side to shreds in the Czech’s opening game. Similarly, Denmark posted six
goals over Latvia. Meanwhile, France scored three early goals against Moldova,
including a Le Sommer double, but the chances dried up for the remaining 60
minutes. Germany dominated the midfield when playing against Iceland, though a
lack of precision in the final third meant only two goals bypassed the
Icelandic goalkeeper. The Netherlands needed two second-half goals to see off a
defiant Romania. Belgium lacked a final touch into the net as Kosovo surprised
everyone with an away draw. In
Asia, North Korea needed two second-half goals to overcome Afghanistan. Jordan
scored a second-half goal to come away from Taipei with a draw. Indonesia
looked set to dominate Sri Lanka after two early goals, but the Sri Lankan defence
settled down and thwarted the constant Indonesian attacks after that. Foord’s
hat trick helped Australia in a solid yet not dominating performance over
Bangladesh, at least on the scoreboard. In
Africa, the Malawians were the dominant team after Cameroon looked set to score
early, with neither team getting on the scorecard. Kenya and Cote d’Ivoire also
played out a draw, with Jereko’s injury-time goal denying the Ivoirians a
second win. With the buoyancy of a new national name, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland)
wiped Ghana out with a 6-2 drubbing and included doubles from Sanga and
Mgcamphalala. Tanzania opened their campaign with a home win over Senegal. In
South America, Brazil started against Bolivia with a first half of fourteen
shots and ten on target. Bolivia’s goalkeeper Álvarez was the mainstay in the
away team, as Brazil only led 1-0. However, the gates opened in the latter part
of the game, and the Brazilians managed to slot home four more before the close
of play.
