Shadow of Myself

Shadow of Myself

A Poem by Alice Maria

I feel like a shadow,
Just a shadow in the sea of people,
Watching myself through my own eyes.
Unable to control what I do, what I see,
I'm just a shadow living inside my own body.
Surrounded by the murmuring of the world,
Listening to hum of the crowd,
Trying to fit in while standing out.
I am a shadow unable to get out.
Unable to be myself,
I am a shadow inside my own body.

This poem really exposes how I am sure a lot of people feel about fitting into society. Some don't find themselves, others do/others don a mask just to fit in and deny their true selves to shine through. This piece really makes you think about those who struggle to find themselves and beggars the question of 'how many people are out there just hiding behind the mask?'

I liked this piece.

Mark.

Thank you. That's exactly how I felt writing this poem.

This is such a descriptive piece despite its repetitive nature. It's also very true, exposing how many feel when trying to go their own way but have to fight being herded into a crowd that look alike and are basically just a moving mass of people rather than the individual identity of the persons within. Thanks for sharing. Very intuitive.

Thankyou. I wrote this poem as a reflection of how I see myself.
I suppose you need to ask yourself. What sect do you want to fit into. Just remember, if you're feeling that way, you'll probably find the person standing beside you feels the same.

LOVED it! Love the vulnerability and the openness. Been there and feel like that more days that naught! This piece feels so genuine to me.

"Trying to fit in while standing out. " - This - so this. I read this and thought to myself, another round peg trying to fit in a square hole. It's good to know there are other round pegs out there.

Well done.

Thankyou I feel like this very often as well.
again..very relatable state we all go through ..invisible in a crowd ..we speak and its as if our voice drifts away on some other wavelength .. some very real tragedies can occur as a result of this disconnection ..depression creeping in as a viper :{ very dangerous times when our sense of self even seems to be dissolving .. this is a similar theme as your "Outsider" I believe ... such an important stage of our lives .. to "find our spot" .. to "fit in" .. to claim our self :)

aren't we all ;)
Haunting and beautifully metaphoric. Isolation/alienation in the midst of many so well-expressed. Rhythmic and lyrical. Will she burst out into the sun?? I so hope she will!!
