Cover your trail ride hard for the hills

Make your way high up the mountain

And steal enough whiskey to last a war

I’ll see you at Devil’s Pass at midnight

Tie up the horses give us a hug brother

A fire cuts into the cold breath of winter

Eat your supper boys hell waits for us

Fresh tobacco roll us another cigarette

Morning coffee could be the last enjoy

Ride fast through the thorn and thicket

Brothers forever bullets and the blood

Rip our faces off the wall paint it black

I am drinking my whiskey tonight. Whiskey can make you see the truth. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.

Superb wild west imagery. It’s a hard life on the trail- a man’s life if you will, without niceties. Duff, your lines in this poem are as rugged as the buttes, canyons, dusty plains, jagged cliffs and hills that, although seen only on tv and in movies, provided the backdrop to our lives in the day. Powerful ghosts of iconic cowboys given life by your fiery words - yes, and ‘Out of the hills..with the sound of hoofs and a hearty “Hi-Yo Silver”, the Lone Ranger rides again!’…and I’m here for it. Again, you rock, my friend!

Thank you so much Annette. I hope you're well my friend.
It felt just like I was watching an old western as I read this. Maybe running with the Wild Bunch or Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. Funny that Wikipedia still reports them dying in a robbery and shootout in Bolivia which is an often repeated story and the basis for the movie. But modern DNA testing in the 1990's has already proven the men supposedly buried in their Bolivian graves are not them. Cassidy or Robert Leroy Parker is said to have returned to Washington State and did not die until 1934 by some accounts. Henry Longabaugh or The Sundance Kid may also have died a likewise peaceful death while living incognito. If so, those two outlaws pulled off the biggest scam in history along with the well orchestrated robberies they were so famous for. I like the idea of that although it would be great to know the truth. Anyway, I enjoyed your poem here. It made me want to polish my spurs and dust off my cowboy boots.

Thank you Dave.
a great read Duff. I found I had to go back over the trail several times due to my mind sifting through a myriad of potential interpretations. A band of brothers (war bond) a cautionary tale of morality (what fate awaits) a simple story of the old west, and I am sure on further thought my mind will and can come up with others. This is why we write, to engage minds, our own and others. Well done sir

Brings me back to all those sepia movies of the wild west and cowboys and mountain men. A thrilling read, makes the reader feel like a cast member of Billy the Kid or other such similar works. Good stuff!

Could have been written by Jesse James himself. He and his brother Frank were on the run a lot. Trying to hide with an assumed name did him in.
