Ch. 35 Forget and Pretend

Ch. 35 Forget and Pretend

A Chapter by theladygraceling

Miles comes in
and says hi,
just to be polite,
but he sounds sincere
instead of sarcastic and teasing
like usual.

It's not hard
to figure out why.

I leave quickly,
before it gets awkward,
and go upstairs
to my room.

Bitsy follows me
and makes herself at home
on my pillow.

I lie down next to her
and stare at the ceiling,
feeling guilty all over again
for what happened with Will.

I hug Bitsy close
and feel like crying
but I'm all out of tears.

"I miss her so much,"
I say into her fur.
"So does Will,
even though
he pretends not to."

It's hard watching Will these days
when he's so sad.

He likes to pretend
that nothing is wrong,
but I know him so well
that he can't fool me.

He likes to pretend
by never remembering.
He won't drive by her house
or bring her up,
or do things that remind him of her.

He likes to pretend
that there never was
a Charlotte Johnson
at all.

It makes it difficult
for me to remember
that he's hurting as much as I am.

It makes it difficult
for me to remember
that they were best friends.

It makes it difficult
for me to remember
that she was his girlfriend too.

Really!? This is a dramatic ending to this chapter! Like...
I love it though, is it bad to love people who are sad? I don't know.
This is a good way to end this chapter though.
