We Are Lions

We Are Lions

A Poem by Tree

We were brothers,  two good

friends cooking obscene amounts of

beef and pork over the fire

of a backyard grill.  We gave

each other the speech:  We are Lions!

    etc.

And we told each other that we would

never allow anyone unlike ourselves into

the pride....  Later, bellies distended by

meat and too much wine we stretched

our bodies out in the shade of the

giant marula tree and added a

Zen monk to our list of future friends.

We agreed, that it would be helpful

to have one walking amongst us.

I love it...it's the way magic happens. Someone announces that they can do it;
then someone agrees that it happened.....

~~ this piece... for me... is a very skilled yet sensitive insight into what our identity means to us... and how (we think) it gets impacted by the presence of another... as well as... by the presence of someone who we think would have a very profound impact on our lives (in the future)... ~~ the contrast between the scene and what a Zen monk could bring to the table is very sharp... ~~ when i was in college, my friends and i used to go to an area where Tibetan monks used to reside and we would play carrom with them and talk about their spiritual journey... ~~ they would ask us about our lives with as much interest... ~~ but they never visited our college even though we invited them all the time...
