The Walrus

The Walrus

A Poem by Slow Leak
"

I wrote this near Big Sur California. I was driving along US 1 when I noticed a sign for elephant seals off to the side of the road. This is my poem for my friend I met, but walrus flowed better.

"
When I saw the walrus, I looked him in the eyes
At me,
He looked back
In tacit acquiescence

We both do not like the world, And how its shaping up
The direction it is going
The beauty it has left
The people it has made us

I stand in solidarity, my friend's belly drags sand,
Two hostages
One on the land
The other bound to the sea

He swims through littered oceans so I can have paper
In all different sizes and textures
To clean hands, blow noses
Wipe a*s, make art, keep lists

What he ate is now gone, only trash where he breathes
Why is he so thin?
"He ingests too much plastic, it makes him sick honey"
I ingest too much plastic, rub my tummy mama
