Happiness Is Material Whether You Like It Or Not

Happiness Is Material Whether You Like It Or Not

A Poem by Richard Mueller
"

Happiness is hard to come by and you can't buy it, but you can buy something that mimicks the feeling

"
I can't buy happiness, but I can buy some flowers and that would be close enough, wouldn't it?
I could smell them, watch them grow, watch the soil collect moisture, and in front of them I could sit
As I please, and that's something I want to do because material possessions are what drive us today
Love is almost nonexistent, trust is broken like that of glass, and things that are wish to be said, we don't say

And that not only frightens us, but it upsets us

I've read this a few times, and each time it feels like you're talking right to me. I love that about poems; the relaxed vibe makes it easy to understand and read. The last few lines are very straightforward, which I feel contrasts with the rest of the prose. (A good thing in my opinion) A small introduction about happiness, a sweet visual of a flower, and truths about the world you can't help but express.
Great write.
