Chapter 1: Officer Brown

Chapter 1: Officer Brown

A Chapter by Jane Lockheart

35 years as an officer.

I loved it.

Making sure the bad guy went to jail.

It felt like I was doing the world a favor.

But how can you do the world a favor from a hospital bed?

Well, that’s what cancer does to ya.

I remember some of my best cases.

Busted a drug ring down town.

That was under investigation for years.

And my team put an end to it.

Found the guy who was guilty of murdering his whole family.

He was on the run for a long time.

But my team caught him.

There one incident that sticks out in my mind though.

It involved a young man who killed his girlfriend.

I wasn’t working this case.

This was early in my career.

I was on cell duty at the local police station.

There weren’t many cells to look after.

Only a few were occupied.

Most prisoners get moved to the county jail pretty fast.

This boy,

He was just arrested for pushing his girlfriend off a bridge.

He killed her.

It was his first night in.

My shift just started.

Making my rounds,

Checking on everyone.

Then I found him.

Bed sheet around his neck,

Hanging from the light above.

He was only 18.

A sad story he had.

Parker was his name.

Alex Parker.
