Pep Talk

Be with someone who’s idea of meeting half way

Is going that extra mile for the ones that they love

Be with someone who cherishes you for who you are

And not for the material possessions that you do or do not have

Be with someone who never once sees those few extra pounds

As true beauty is not measured by weight but by depth

Be with someone who is afraid to lose you

Because they simply cannot imagine living their life without you

Be with someone who believes in those vows long before they’re spoken

“Through better or worse… In sickness and in health…”

Be with someone who feels that a few months of hardships

Is worth a lifetime of happiness, of love and companionship

Be with someone who will be a child when you need to laugh

And an adult when you need two arms to hold you tight

Be with someone who looks upon you and sees your greatness, your potential

Who supports your endeavors, your every hope and dream

Be with someone who appreciates everything that you do for them

Even when the times get rough and gifts given are handmade

Be with someone who ignites a roaring fire in your heart, your soul

For no other reason than your pleasure becoming their own

Be with someone who wants to grow with you, and not just grow old

But will bleed, will sweat, will fail and try again at your side

Be with someone who will break down the door when you shut it

Who will never let you forget your worth, to yourself and to them

Be with someone who would rather perish than hurt you

Who places you before themselves, can't see an ‘I’ in the word team

Be with someone who makes you feel as if you’re always enough

Only merely human, but still so perfect in your imperfections

Be with someone who loves you so much, so deeply, so unequivocally

That there isn’t anything that they wouldn’t do for you

Be with someone who loves you in the ways that you love them

Who does all these things not because they have too or are asked too

But only because being a good person comes easy

Wow! That's a pretty tall order. Scores or demands or expects 10 out of 10 on every aspect, every side, of a long term relationship. I might manage a few 7/8s and a couple of 6s if I work at it! As for the rest ....?

I'm not sure why, but I was reminded of Desiderata when reading it. There's something about the repeatedness, the listing of all those aspects. And so I found it simultaneously intimidating and also wonderful and uplifting. And above all, truthful. This ain't easy, but it's worth it.

Mind if I point out a couple of spelling / grammar things?
- first line should be whose
- penultimate line should be have to and asked to

One last thought, which might be simply cosmetic or presentational - I'm not sure. Did you think about separating this into several 2 line 'verses' with white space in between? It might be interesting to see whether this would affect how people might take it in.

Ahaha.:) It's not that tall of an order, sweet pea. It's should be easy to be honest and simply be there for someone when one cares, don't you think? Sometimes, I falter... Am a screw up. But every once in while receiving a love like this would be nice. And it is worth it. Thanks for the review and for the suggestions!:) I thought about breaking it into two lines but didn't care for that pause as I simply wanted this to flow.

Of course you're right about it being easy with the right person. But it's hard! At times such as these, I sometimes turn to those fountains of good advice, Karen and Richard Carpenter ... You've got to love me for what I am, for simply being me. Don't love me for what you intend or hope that I will be. And if you're only using me to feed your fantasy. You're really not in love, so let me go. I must be free ... This isn't necessarily inconsistent with what you write, but somehow it cut me a little more slack!

Totally understand about not separating and keeping it as one. I was really just thinking aloud. Nice job!

It is hard... And your words come close to being precisely what this poem implies or at least how I had felt as I had written it. Just wanting to be loved for me even though I am far from perfect. That 'take me as I am'... This poem honestly isn't a jab of sorts, nor was it written to anyone else, this was for me... To be reminded of the affections that I give and that I have worth despite if it is appreciated let alone seen. This is to remind myself that regardless of my wrongdoings, I have done good.
