What's Your Platform

What's Your Platform

A Poem by Cindy Marietta

You notice the habits early on

of your partying friends and

junkie lovers.

Many crush their substances in a similar way

a couple hard pounds and

many slices and dices.

They take their card and line up line

after line.

Some do a few and

some do many.

But what is unique to each person

is the platform beneath them.

What surface they stare at as they inhale

one deep breath.

For that surface is the last thing they will see

with a clean mind.

I’ve stared at wood,

at marble and metal.

But the one thing that pains me too much to look at

is a mirror.

For I can’t bare to stare at my own reflection

as I rail a line

to only

get away from

myself.

This sums up the self loathing that can accompany any kind of addiction, or abuse of any substance..the exultant highs with the crushing lows...I could be in that room with you, could be feeling the same.
