the Sand, the Water, and the Wind

the Sand, the Water, and the Wind

A Poem by Treble

The lingering tides of storms past

wash over carvings in the sand today.

A sunset casts its glow over what’s left

of a fantastical picture once reality.

Still visible are the grains of sand

aching to shift, to move with the wind,

to form the carving long gone,

eroded by time’s cruel nature.

Sandals and fingers etch new pictures

in the sand, each one erased faster than the last;

in moments between, the sand pleads for movement

but the wind ebbs and flows with time.

Each grain of sand moved by a foreign finger,

rendered hopeless by the relentless passing of time,

slowly loses will until it gives into the mind

of the wind, moving only as it is moved.

Sand, water and wind are excellent metaphors for the experience of physical life. Matter is never static; it constantly changes and rearranges. The poet here seems to view the situation as an example of the the tragic view of life. It indeed can be that, but it is not the only view. Very well thought out and written piece.
