Broken Vase

Ten Words Given - Contest Entry

“Who knew it would come to this?” Cora mutters aloud.

Cora’s inquiry might as well be in a foreign tongue. For the three hapless malcontents, standing before her, bear no discernable resemblance to any credible witness. Their reddened eyes darting with disturbing coldness, as random bursts of red and blue lights from the police cars seem to keep them in a trance.

She’s been a paramedic over six years. Sure, Cora has seen the warning signs in this neighborhood. She can remember the face of every person that died in her ambulance. But this is different. Times like this, make a person feel helpless. If not for having to take Larry’s shift when he called in sick, she would have participated in this protest, turned riot. Could have been her body on the streets like all the others, up and down the avenue.

Some guy with a bat, smashes store windows, while whistling the jingle from the TV show Jeopardy, causing the electrical decorations to careen onto the sidewalk where standing water from fire hoses pool. Everyone including firemen, passers-by, and him perish amid contorted spasms, like a low budget zombie flick, when touching the stream of water flowing in the gutters.

First EMTs on the scene rush in, succumbing to electrocution as well.

As time moves forward, Cora’s compassion depletes with haste, for her heart is a broken vase.

Wow, pretty powerful piece here. Very well done. Thank you for sharing and entering.
Appropriate for the times in which we find ourselves living in. Do these people understand
the repercussions of their actions? I do not believe so or they wouldn't being doing the deed.
Hindsight is 20/20, sure, but the damage is already done. Very clever!
