Battlefield Within

Battlefield Within

A Poem by Traci

As the sun of our empathy lowers itself beneath the horizon,
lights dim and the world slowly darkens
in the midst of suffering
the endless battles between good and evil,
right against wrong
rages on.
True moral beings, cognizant of fragility,
full of conviction, virtue and honor,
fighting our way through tragic operations of fate
manifestations of war.
Flawed aspects of tragic heroes
own our own shadows
we defeat some dark forces
camouflaging the masked evil
yet, succumbing to others in defeat.
Divided between soul and spirit
we continue marching briskly in the footsteps of our forebearers
fighting for a cause.
Why?
Because little did we know,
the turmoil of good and hidden evil is not ours.
We are not common soldiers in this battle.
We are the battlefield itself!
This is our life.
We must own it.
We decide who wins.
We are a powerful force
the ones that will guide
through even the most difficult trials and tribulations
into ultimate victories.
And when we realize this
we will understand our strength, our true power
the twin senses of empathy and gratitude
humanity preservation and life transforming truths
uncommon valor becomes a pillar of virtues
leaving a remarkable legacy
for
future generations.

i like the theme of this so much...we are not pawns on a chessboard...we are the players who move the pieces...and we are the pieces to be moved.
We make our own correct decisions and our own mistakes...it is easy to lay blame elsewhere...talk about all the forces working for us or against us...but the truth is, we have to own it.
excellent, thoughtful write, Traci....

Traci, as an Emerson fan, I see threads of what he wrote in his essay, Self-Reliance. Maybe this is some modern-day transcendentalism. Regardless, it's exceptionally well written and well delivered in this poem.

Your title, quite simple, is the perfect one to capture the message here. The battle rages within, and we are masters of our fate, or at least how we cope with what's happening around us. We often adopt mindsets and labels from others (Emerson called it conformity), and they often negatively shape how we see ourselves and our world. Ultimately, it's the individual who decides who "wins" and "loses," as I believe you've conveyed in this poem. Remarkable poem, Traci.

You speak well and walking our talk is the measure of whom we are as a person.

How beautiful the weaving of hope and positivity through such eloquence and passionate words. I am glad to see it there within you as you push forward the inspirations to bring light to us all.

' Flawed aspects of tragic heroes - own our own shadows - we defeat some dark forces - camouflaging the masked evil - yet, succumbing to others in defeat.'

Traci , read this near analysis of What and How three times. First time cos your words are here and had promised. Second reading allowed time to absorb the words you've laid with some considerable thought, emotion and more. Then, had to think hard before balancing the facts, the extremes - finally realising my feelings are the same as yours. Tis a case of being both own master and servant, of taking responsibility for both mistakes and credits. Tragically, both as an Entirety and Individual being, we fail to learn by mistakes, by history. Wonder if that's why there are so many clouds enveloping our so.called day to day living? Your more than finely written post has really and should really raise thought and debate. Thank you for sharing. x

Liked the emphasis on personal choice. The battle between good and evil, after all, takes place within us and we get to say who wins.
