In the Dead of Night

In the Dead of Night

A Chapter by Robert Francis Callaci

In the Dead of Night

The law overturned, clinics closed-- the only place where a desperate woman can go now is to the candy doctors, who rip, snip, and suck the life out of you, for a nominal fee. It took nine weeks to separate charlatans from the hacks.  The good doctors who could’ve helped fled the state.

twist and spin

hanger in

ruptured cords

sharpened swords

wounded wombs

tiny tombs

discarded pounds

wailing sounds

nothing to hold

three months old

As I lie on a bed of stained sheets and died up blood, I cry out in excruciating pain. My popcorn doctor haphazardly sews up my wounds, throws me a few pills, and hands me his bill.

body torn and broken

never to suckle and give birth

to make amends for a life lost

hallowed be thy guilt and sin

by letting my child die within

always wondering what could’ve been

give me one more shot of that gut busting gin

I need to stuff unending grief and sorrow in...

I pray that she is born fully formed and the angels name her Destiny

Note: The Supreme Court in the U.S. A. will soon have a 6-3 conservative majority. Many of our laws concerning health and abortion will be overturned. Many states will outlaw abortion and many young women who don’t have the means to get an abortion from a state who offers it will turn to dark alleys and get one from butchers and shopkeepers- just like the good old days when America was great again.
