Sophomore Year - Beginnings

Sophomore Year - Beginnings

And so the story really begins c:

"
Ah, the start of sophomore year.
I guess you could call this the beginning of the end.
As it turns out, I was staying for my sophomore year - Well, the first two months of it. Our orders got pushed back, so I was here until the end of September.
I wasn't complaining.
I had two more months in a school I had come to adore. It was better than nothing.
As I walked into the school, I smiled. It felt like I was home.
I walked into the cafeteria, and my friends waved to me.
It was good to be back.
As I sat with my friends, we laughed and cracked jokes in the annual orientation assembly.
We were happy we were no longer freshman. No longer the bottom of the food chain. We were still underclassmen, but we were a step up from the newbies.
As the freshman filed in, you could hear the murmurs around the room. They all looked terrified.
Wait. Hold on.
I searched the crowd, I thought I saw...
Was that...
Oh. My.
It was him.
And I stopped smiling.
He had managed to make my heart drop.
Every damn time.
"Poor freshman, they have no idea what their getting into," whispered my friend next to me. I heard a snicker.
My eyes drifted towards Bobby. "Yeah," I said quietly. "No idea."
As they sat down, our principal Mr. Gross (that man could bore any living creature to death with his speeches) took the podium.
I glanced over at Bobby, sitting a couple rows in front.
Hell, both of us had no idea what we were getting into.
* * *
After the assemble, we bounced from period to period getting introduced to our classes and teachers. As the day dragged on, I slowly remembered why I disdained school so much.
The sweet monotony of classes - oh, how I've missed you.
Sigh.
I read the last class on my list.
Autotech.
I had to drop band because I needed to take a professional careers course. Autotech was the perfect option.
Apparently Bobby thought so too.
Because when I walked in, guess who was sitting next to the only open seat available.
Aha, life. You're too funny sometimes.
I sat down, and Bobby smiled at me.
"Funny you're in this class," he said.
I laughed. "I was thinking the same thing."
"You know you're like the only girl in this class," he said. "You know, besides Challie."
I turned around and searched the room, and I found he was right. A freshman girl - Challie - was sitting in the back.
Basically, it was a class filled with testosterone-filled teenage guys and with access to tools.
My hopes for this class dwindled.
"That sucks," I said, slumping into my chair.
"Hey, at least you got me," he said.
I laughed. "Yeah, because that's such a step up."
He raised his eyebrows, and I smiled. "I was kidding, come on."
He tried to keep the straight face, but a small smile creeped on it. "Sure, Whitney."
Mr. Muther cleared his throat at the front of the room.
"Alright, who knows the safety procedures in a shop?"
No one answer.
So he explained safety procedures for a tortuous hour and a half.
It. Was. Horrible.
So after a lovely story of a man getting his face burned off by battery fluids, the bell finally rang.
I was out there in a heartbeat.
"Whitney, wait up! God, you walk fast," he said.
"Only out of that class."
"Hey, I thought you were leaving?" he asked.
"Our orders got pushed back to the end of September," I said.
"That's good," he said. "I actually got really sad when you said you were leaving."
"Really?"
He nudged me. "Yeah, you're pretty cool. Most of the time."
I rolled my eyes and he laughed.
"Hey, this is my homeroom," I said, stopping in front of Mr. Bent's room.
"I'll see you around," he said.
I smiled as he walked away, and I walked in the classroom.
You know, two months seems kind of short now that I thought about it.
I just hope it didn't come too quickly.
