end of linger

end of linger

A Poem by highonwords

i got plain curious,
looking at you,

it was a benign mistake,
a threadbare novelty

soon, frantically,
i looked away

i found a girl,
dropped her cherry

zigzagged thru the mesh
of elusive faces,

blank gestures,
the empty shell

i am to these people,
the pale exclamation

i am to myself,
the stranger,

waiting for someone
to find her way to me,

mildly deep,
barely urgent,

for a few minutes
to ripple next

to an open-ended hour
of talk and wine,

the clink of touch
that never will,

so lost in hope
so near

Love is never our ideal. There's been too much hogwash of valentines, hearts and frilly lace. Love is hard work, responsibility and sacrifice. How many people in their right minds would like to fall into that? But I've got to say that there is reward for all the hard work and respect for the responsibility and appreciation for the sacrifice if it is shared with the right person. Stir well and put it on simmer for ten to fifty years. It comes out of the mix tasting sweet. Hope you have that some day. I enjoyed the read.
