Dearest Goodbye

Dearest Goodbye

A Poem by Cory Firestine
"

Dedicated to Eric E. who passed 6/18/06. This poem was written the week of his passing.

"

You were always there for me,

As I was there for you.

We made each other laugh and cry,

Then we would feel brand new.

Though our time as friends was short,

I could never forget,

That I knew you were someone special,

The moment that we met.

Our friendship got off to a slow start.

As all great things should,

Feeling each other out,

And knowing where we stood.

Though your time on Earth has expired,

You will never be forgotten,

For all the lives that you have touched,

And for making good times when they were rotten.

You are truly an Angel,

And to have known you I am blessed.

Because without you,

I would be a total, utter mess.

You were taken from us much too soon,

But now you are in a better place,

Far from pain and from hate,

You will now pass through Saint Peter's gate.

You called me your Guardian Angel,

Yet now, you are the Angel guarding me,

Down here on Earth,

I am always yours to see.

You filled me with your guidance,

And you filled me with your love,

To those who remain here,

We all envy you above.

Though your body is no longer here,

Our memories of you still remain.

So we will still feel you from time to time,

Even though we are now on separate planes.

We will see you in our minds,

And feel you in our hearts.

We will visit you in our dreams,

Every time we are about to fall apart.

The story of Eric, the great human being,

Has already come to a close.

And now the story of Eric, the Guardian Angel,

Has just been proposed.

For those of us left behind,

We cannot do very much.

We can only let this make us stronger,

And learn from this and such.

So Eric, I let you go.

Go be with GOD.

But don't forget us down here,

Especially who we are.

Because eventually, sooner or later,

We will all be with you again,

Up in Heaven with our Eric,

Our Angel and our friend.

This is not a goodbye,

But just a see you later.

There is such quiet beauty and reverence in poems written for the deceased. Perhaps it's I feel somewhat intrusive, like a peeping Tom looking into someone else's heart as he undresses his emotions in the window. Or perhaps because I did not know Eric and feel that I've walked into a private session between you and him, not realizing that my presence there was not just welcomed but appreciated. This is a beautiful homage to this wonderful person whom I can only glimpse at through your words but whom I'd like to meet someday in Heaven as well.

There is such bittersweet beauty here in the life that lingers on within.. and the hope to see them again one day. Your words life and inspire, and help soften the sting of death.
