Papa

Papa

A Poem by Erin Sky
"

dedicated to my dad, cynicised revolutionary in denial with a heart of gold surrounded by marshmallow and guitar strings

"

Papa

don’t be angry no more

don’t holler back, change the channel

Papa

look at the pitcher i made for you in klas

s’i and yu playin’ tag in the yard

Papa

i gonna bring yu more pitchers tomorrow

and yous gonna teach me to dwaw oliphaunts

we’ll make a pitcher-book for Mama

Papa

y’sterday Miss Baker taught us howda make windows

that the sun peeps through when i’mma sleeping

like we have in church

with crayon dust and shiny paper red yellow purple green

we made’em so pretty

Papa

when i grows up, i’mma make more

windows and yous gonna make room for them

in our lil house, and Mama will smile at

them and see Jesus in the sunshine

Papa

and when I is older and taller and stronger

and smarter too, when my hair are long and light and pretty

Papa

i is gonna bring you a revolution

lay it on your pillow

i gonna give you a churchglass, weddingring heart

and i is gonna bring you a revolution

and no one’s ever gonna be apart.
