The Fire in the Hearth

The Fire in the Hearth

A Poem by Amanda Worthington

Out side

It bites

It stings

It snows

It rains.

The wind rages

Howling for company.

The fire in the hearth

Burns brightly

warmly

invitingly.

Scaring away the cold

Of the winter night.

It feels as though

The flames,

Leaping and stretching,

Are my weapon

Against the harshness of the cold

and the darkness of the night.

This reminds me of something that would be in the book "Good Poems For Hard Times" It's a poetry collection and you should check it out if you haven't yet.

It's always better to be inside where it's warm and safe on those cold winter nights. And something about a fire in the hearth is a more tangible source of comfort and defense from the elements than modern day heaters. Good job of capturing that feeling.
