Life Without The Sun

A Poem by Sheila Kline
"

How we choose to spend the treasured gift of "time" will determine the outcome of our days. Shall we earn ageless momentos of beauty or wilted adornments of pride?....it is for choose

Life Without The Sun

As we travel cobbled roads of life, how do we traverse from here to there--
Tragically as prayers are uttered, while clenched in a death grip of despair,
Or bowing to loud accolades of praise with recognition of a job well done,
Praises reaped, while standing among those living a life without the sun?

Is success gained from a storehouse of profits reaped from lack of repair,
Gained by casting doubt on fields of faith where seed was sowed with care?
When tending fields, were rows plowed with a crooked hoe in an act of fun,
Sprouting denied as long whips of disillusion shaded healing rays of the sun?

Predators scream as vultures patiently wait to devour an ignorant plea,
Reminders when scavengers were guests at feasts of unrepentant mockery.
Was wealth gleaned from fields filled with wheat sprouted from a lurid plan,
Gorging on fruit plucked from overflowing baskets filled by errors of man?

Sad were days when souls were fed by pride from walls crumbling down;
Memories in stone fading when coated with a template of pity's sordid gown.
They waxed in shadowed dreams of past spilled from plans of futures begun,
Fields destroyed by overflowing roots wrought with spoiled plots of conviction.

Is it necessary for man to challenge when treacherously climbing to the top,
Must he encounter difficulties on rungs of life's ladder, causing him to stop?
When we’re in deepest valleys, walking in fields made lush with ripened vine,
Have we lost gifts of prosperity by casting off good to douse it with sour wine?

Be wise and take time to tally the trophies which you’ve gathered by your side.
Have you earned mementos of ageless beauty, or wilted adornments of pride,
Been challenged to discover ways to garner profits reaped from genesis days?
Guard lessons learned while climbing up life's ladder, withered from decay,
for in the end

A life without the sun
Brings woe to everyone!
A life toiled in the sun
Heals woe's destruction!

Wow! Sheila, what a deep philosophical write this is. It is thought provoking to say the least. I love the layers which, I believe, will not only mean something different to each person who reads it, but can also reveal something different to each of us each time we read it, depending on our mood, or situation at the time of reading. Very well written, my friend.

I really like this! Very sophisticated and beautiful. I think if you arranged it differently for shorter verses it would have had an even better rythm though. At least thats what I think may just be a personal preference though

Congrats on winning the "Imagination" contest, SB! A fine poem, with extensive use of metaphor. You may wish to change the word "momento" to "memento" in the two places it occurs, though. Good Job!

Wonderful piece of work...gave memories that I thought I lost long ago of my childhood and when it was easy to be a kid compared to the world and economy today.

man you went deeply philosophical on me here, I have to say I agree totally that we can't fix the problems of the world by sitting back in the shadows and hoping... we all need to do our part, even little things if uit all we can do. The best thing way to start is spreading love to strangers as well as friends.
