Morning Universe

Morning Universe

A Poem by Fabian G. Franklin

Many mornings I have walked along the streets and wood.

The rabbit paths of fields my feet have fully understood.

There the hare sits nibbling breakfast; ears alert.

Brown grass trampled by trespass; a wee bit closer to the dirt.

I listened to the mockingbird’s  repertoire as he sang.

Bold tail like boat oar thrashing  morning with disdain.

Pert head poised pointing beak to heaven challenging angels.

Not reviled by heavenly host, impervious to all danger.

The black racer slithers from the path, hastening his retreat.

Beware of the human there behind the tramp of heavy feet.

The sun rose clear across the beads of dew on emerald grass.

Spider webs vibrated diamond shadows as I passed.

Some mornings clouds cover both sky and earth in fog.

My only company might be the distant barking of a dog.

I never grudge the chill of rain or snow upon my face.

Weather and animals in God’s creation have their place.

Does the flower ever question why its bud must bloom?

Why must spring pass? It cannot last with winter coming soon.

After morning coffee I set out to greet the day.

Aching knees and walking stick to help me on the way.

Grant me one more morning to count rabbits on my walk.

I greet the mockingbird although he never stops to talk.

Take no offense in me, you angels; who was not born with wings.

I dare not join the chorus of bold mockers as they sing.

I cannot mimic the skillful craft of spider’s gossamer net

Or even glide with easy grace the serpent’s path and yet

I feel there must be some small niche I fill like theirs or worse

Make me harmless as the hare, in this, my universe
