The Price of Being Clever

The Price of Being Clever

A Poem by Fabian G. Franklin
"

"You got to pay the piper, In the end you will be so much wiser"... Jeff Healey "River of No Return"

"

And what was I supposed to do that day

As you turned and walked sadly, silently away

Was there anything I could do or say?

Should I have cried; begged you to stay?

Hearts and souls are sometimes mute

When expected to be astounding or astute

Did you want some brilliant revelation?

Did the moment hinge on my imagination?

Did I fail pitifully in your estimation?

The moment returns with questioned frustration

I do not have nor had I then, the slightest notion

Of what you wanted or some secret absolving potion

To make both of our mistakes disappear

Now it's all water under the proverbial dear

Chalked up to experience and painful history;

A man left alone to fathom a mystery

I never wanted anything from you but truth

Perhaps that's something too demanding of youth

I wonder if in old age it becomes any bolder

The days grow longer, the nights get colder

I only remember that pleading look and your tears

You touched my cheek whispering goodbye in my ear

Then you turned and walked slowly with your burden

And I was left alone; unhappy and uncertain

There may have been something I could have done or said

I never knew what you expected of me instead

I just stood there watching you leave my life forever

Holding the ring from your finger without saying anything

Clever

Author's Note

Fabian G. Franklin
I was thinking about the line, "kissing to be clever"...and I thought I would elaborate on the theme of how being "clever" could cost one a relationship. It's a bit of imaginary drama on my part. I'm very happily married.

well...yes, it could cost a relationship...but sometimes the expectations are too high on the other side...and we are always expected to be perfectly clever and entertaining, which is really pretty impossible..
we are just human, and do our best...especially with how we love...
