Spectre

Spectre

A Poem by Doodley
"

Playing with Fate.

"
As sweeping, shifting, silent mist slides across the moors,
And the Wolverine throws back his head and howls from forest floors,
Will the Godforsaken Spectre arise to greet the night,
To bring all his pain, abound in chain, to warn us of his plight.

For he was once a foolish man who gambled his Love as prize,
Cast his fate, and chose too late, the numbers on his dies;
As Lady Luck abandoned him and his die spun in air to fall,
His heart burst from his crumpled chest when he realised he'd lost it all.

Years and years of toil disappeared in resin dust,
His home, his wealth, his family, his Love, evaporated when he went bust;
The upstanding became the homeless, a lonely wandering soul,
Who spent his days cast adrift, an unclean beggar with a bowl.

In the cold and dark of a Winter's night, when his life had lost its sun,
He stared into the frowning moon, and took a bullet from a gun;
His body fell to cold cement, his eyes a lifeless stare,
And Life rolled on, a neverending song, and didn't seem to care.

His tortured soul as it depart, went not to Heaven nor to Hell,
But to a shattered parallel Earthen world, where the wingless Angels fell;
From that day to this, amidst the swirling mist, he walks along those moors,
Dragging his chain of a life of pain, through all the unlocked doors.

And as we mortal beings sleep in peace and perchance to dream,
He stands above our sleeping heads and into our minds does scream;
His haunts of warning and words insane, to tell us of his fate,
To change our minds and wicked ways, before it is too late.

And when the haunting hour is over, and all is screamed and done,
He drags his chains, across the parallel plains, and stares into the rising sun;
For he was once a mortal man, who played with chance without fear,
And now he stands in this Godforsaken land, and sheds a spectral tear.

This is fantastic, how did I miss this one. You got me when the mist went across the moors. The first grouping had me back long ago, then as the story progressed I was brought up to more present times. The last has him in a God forsaken place. Very nice write. Valentine

Thank you for reading and reviewing, Valentine. I appreciate your words on this piece.
An incredible write!
This poem read like a movie running on screen before our eyes, a movie with a perfect end.
The nostalgia of a spectre, a spectre carrying gentleman qualities, came out very well in this beautiful word craft of yours.
A beautiful story nicely woven into a poem, A Doodley poem, with perfect rhyming which is always a pleasure to read. A specter showing concern, regretting his deeds and trying to give a message.
Wow! Brilliant creativity.
Kudos to your thought and its execution!
Thanks for sharing.:--):-):-)

Very very beautiful write :-)

The whole journey of a man from his reckless youth to a remorseful afterlife is beautifully envisioned here. I like when a poem depicts a story with a meaningful message. This poem depicting a story is not scary but the way he lived his life and the after effect of it is certainly very scary.
Yes, it is definitely better to change for good before its too late.
This is surely one of your best writes with an extremely beautiful imagery and amazing concept.
All the stanzas are exceptionally exquisite.
Your Spectre is a spectacular write. Kudos :-)

Very few have the pen gravitas to write lyrical short stories. You do with aplomb. Very nice work:)

Absolutely love this. Your imagery is perfect and the moral behind it resonates within me. It reminded me of the old fairy tales ... the good ones, that are scary and real. You did an amazing job!
