The Summer of ‘89

The Summer of ‘89

A Poem by J Todd Underhill

Running around in the summer sun.
Baking my skin in the Wyoming heat.
In search of girls, high times and fun.
The summer that could never be beat.

Writing poetry and the occasional song;
With time and opportunity growing thinner.
Yellowstone whiskey and rips from the bong,
Playing Guns and Roses and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

In my life one of my most favorite times,
Living beyond my childhood insecurity.
Writing line after line of poetic rhymes,
A young poet in a fedora and concert tee.

A poet unsure what the future will hold,
Embracing romance and living for the day.
Letting the summer slowly and steadily unfold,
Writing down every though that he had to say.

How I miss the poet that I was back then,
But I kind like all of the progress that I have made.
However it is fun to remember way back when,
Then see now the poet that is being displayed.

I suppose we all have that summer that we remember more than any other. Mine was probably the summer of 1978. I had a lover that I used to meet at night when she would stay at her grandmother's house on the week-ends. Those were some wild nights and I would stagger in at dawn to my parent's house wasted from partying and smelling like sex. Lynard Skynard was popular then too. Guns and Roses had never been heard of but we did have Nazereth which was pretty hard rock with songs like "Hair of the Dog" and "Please Don't Judas Me".
