Moments of Madness Shaped In Many Ways

Moments of Madness Shaped In Many Ways

A Poem by Poppy Ruth Silver

I never had much money
but I own rich memories
particularly to certain songs
tequila slammers
salt and lime
the whole hog as I used to say
hangovers that made my brain bleed
but damn good memories, nevertheless
cigarettes in smoke filled pubs
strangers mingled and happy
the smell of leather jackets
bikers with hands so gentle yet huge
towered giants with hearts of rainbows
memories, I have a few, as do we all
youth was an interesting time for me
a mission of testing the boundaries
balance of seeking and defiance
the need to self destruct and at the same time...live
the curse of depression hit me at the age of nineteen
before then, life was sweet
even if ignorant in some ways
I haven't drank tequila in a long time
can't even stand the smell of it
yet something inside me craves for a final taste
one last blow out, a chance to ignite the fury
that eats away at me inside, a purge of sorts
I miss the smell of leather
smoke filled pubs
tequila slammers
even waking up on a stranger's doorstep at 7 a.m.
I miss it all
I miss myself
or the self I once thought I knew
before I became a hostage to depressed health

"yet something inside me craves for a final taste
one last blow out, a chance to ignite the fury
that eats away at me inside, a purge of sorts"

These are haunting lines- I think depression can make us be even reluctant to reach out for happiness, for fear that we may not receive enough satisfaction.

Depression can strip away a once lively outgoing person. It does make you a hostage at time. Anxiety can do the same thing which I myself suffer from but luckily I'm a strong person and make myself do things even if it makes me uncomfortable. I hate be a hostage to the panic that can stir at the release of a feather. I can feel this piece deep inside my soul.

This was bittersweet, brought back some memories for me as well, depression is hard, but you can make it through, just remember only you can change yourself, with a lot of strength and will power, you end up becoming your own best friend, memories will always surface, you just have to be the judge of letting them be the blessing or the curse. Great write :)

╰☆╮Depression can really change a person. I have been fighting it for a year now and I am most certainly not the person I was just a year ago. I could relate to this piece in my own sense. Great writing.╰☆╮

This one bought a smile to my face. Very vivid details. I could imagine every portrait you wrote with words.

I understand this poem. Once I enjoyed the drink and laughter. Old age had slowed me down. I enjoyed the poem. You are still young. Many more days to dance and sing. Always a pleasure to read your outstanding poetry.

This one speaks volumes. I used to be a fan of tequila but now I can't drink any liquor without bursting into flames. I never decompress - and it is frustrating. The clock, it is not my friend.

wow I love this for so many reasons, totally relatable instead I always managed to come away and bateh in the sunlight ...

you have told a tale and a great journey, a harsh and hard journey that takes you to the meat of a certain time in life ... it's really fantastic ...
