If I Told You the Truth

If I Told You the Truth

If I told you the truth,

            Would you twist every word?

Quantifying and qualifying,

 Until the meaning was blurred?

If I told you the truth,

            Would you try to understand?

Paradigms inevitably sway and fall,
When they’re built on shifting sand.

                        It’s a convoluted maze,

Where the heart runs to hide.

Walled ‘round with thorns,

                                           To protect your fragile pride.

    Bring on those pretty lies,

                                    Smile and nod your head.

                                        Believing in the fairy tales,

                                           That cavort through your head.

If I told you the truth,

It would set the demons free.

To question the righteousness,

            Of vicious mob mentality.

If I told you the truth,

            It would rout the faux-facts.

Despite brainwashing and indoctrination,

            Deceptions inevitably collapse.

                                It’s a convoluted maze,

Where the soul runs to hide.

Walled ‘round with duplicity,

                                           To deceive and divide.

       Cling to the misguided rhetoric,

Secure in your house of glass.

                                       The end justifies your means,

So much righteous anger…so little class.

Wow. I love this poem. I don't usually write reviews without doing constructive criticism but I fail to see anything I'd change. The rhythm of the lines, the conceit, the arbitrary language, are great. But perhaps the thing that I most enjoyed was the presentation. It compliments all of those aforementioned things, guiding the reader along at a perfect pace and rhythm.

Sorry that I am so focused on form but this is just one of those times when I truly enjoyed watching an author dance with her pen.

Thanks for sharing Reed!

Brilliantly put! The wobbly format is also effective. It emphasises the dangers of telling the truth, and setting those demons free!, As for the misguided rhetoric, glass houses, and righteous anger, as you say, let them cling to it ... as long as they don't bother me! I enjoyed this poem.

Thank you for the kind words, BBP.
Hi there I've been away for a while an d the first thing I chose to read was this. I'm so very glad I did.
Could you imagine what the world would be like if we were all truly as gullible as the politicians believe us to be. I'm so anxious to see the results of the coming elections in November.

Glad you enjoyed it, Dave.
Thanks for the read.
This was amazing. AMAZING.
it left an impact on my mind. The truth is always out there but how many are brave enough to accept it or leave their comfort zone to seek it. This was very well written with an amazing rhyme. Its basically an overview of how society is nowadays concealed by lies and evil .
Great work !

Thank you, Pia...I appreciate your kind words, and I'm glad you liked it.
i really relate to this...relationships yes...but politically...if they told us the truth, would we even know it? there are so many lies now....everything is so blurred...yes, convoluted...
so what we have here is something like sheryl crow sang..."lie to me, i promise i'll believe you"---
