IN THE RAIN

IN THE RAIN

A Story by DIVYA

Sometimes the right advice comes from the most unexpected places

The sky growled its intention, beginning to drizzle. She quickened her pace, aiming to reach office before the downpour.  She saw him walking toward her from the opposite road. “Hi”, she waved. “It’s been so long.”  He smiled, raising his cap, walking alongside her. “You’ve been away so much lately!” He nodded in agreement. Things had been crazy at his place. He looked her over and commented that she looked jaded and must be cutting down on food as usual. Starving always made her look like a dry-eyed raccoon. “On the other hand I’ve been stress bingeing. It’s the ‘building’ that’s giving me hell. The commercial taxes are rocketing and all the tiresome lawsuits with equally irksome tenants would give anyone ulcers” she complained.  “I have a few good offers but selling an heirloom is never done, isn’t it?”She said. He looked thoughtful, as they stepped over rain-filled puddles in tandem. She was never really good at keeping things, he finally said, besides, what good was an heirloom that gave her continual heartburn ? “So, what should I do?” She asked.   She knew the answer to that, he replied, before stepping across a large, overfilled culvert that seemed to have appeared out of nowhere. She need not come his way; he called out from the other end of the culvert, it was getting too dark. “But we need to talk more. I hardly see you nowadays” She insisted. He pointed to the deep, swirling pit, indicating it could be risky as the water had begun to gush out like a murky stream, separating them. She wavered, stepping back, as he swiftly walked away.

“Father” she murmured softly, stirring in her sleep. The next day the heiress to the Cereus Tower Building put it up for sale in a surprise move that would have been much against the wishes of her late father.

In your words are such vast worlds of thought, and here you bring to life a dream that is more than a dream. Here is the ocean alive in a soul's night, voices of the past, and a light illuminating the steps to come and the courage to make them so. Powerfully written, dear poet.

A very compelling story... to me this speaks of someone who imagines talking to a parent that is deceased needing advice and trying to think of what the parent would tell them if they were still alive.

Yes hon its such a blessing.
That turbulence of water in essence was like a barrier, preventing unison and ultimately a satisfying resolve. It's amazing indeed how our subconscious interprets our everyday problems and scenarios!

Fascinating short story Divya, I'm always drawn to and enjoy such enigma and parallel reasoning...superb my friend!!
