Lycopene High

Lycopene High

A Poem by barleygirl
"

lycopene = micro-nutrient in tomatoes

"

Upon high ridges of the California coast
summer serves up an unrelenting roast
after watering the garden (a daily affair)
I gather newly-ripe fruit with utmost care.

Baby tomatoes plump, scarlet and sweet
watchful canines gobble all fallen treats
as the months drone on, so do variations
my kitchen cranks out tomato creations.

Topping a salad of salmon and greens
or pumping the pop in a pot of beans
lip-smacking batch of lycopene linguini
succulent salsa slathers BBQ’ed weenies.

All summer long my spirits are buoyant
my bountiful blush is downright flamboyant
who gives a hang if world order goes awry?
nothing can hinder my lycopene high.

I saw the title and thought of a school for tomatoes. There must be no feeling like eating veg (tomatoes are veg right?? idk?) from one's own patch. Before he died, my old boss (God rest him) told me of the times he would pee on his wife's tomatoes when they argued. :S

Ah, such a delightful fruit that adds zest, "vim and vigor" to so many wonderful culinary delights, certainly has the power to give one a lycopene high!
Your verses are abundant with mouth watering descriptions, and the photo of baby tomatoes that are evidence of the labor of love that you imbue in growing and harvesting them makes me want to lick the page....LOL!
I especially like the line about the succulent salsa slathers BBQ-ed weenies! And you are right in that with such wonderful "eats" who really cares at the time about anything but enjoying them???

From title to finish this is awesome. Dazzling imagery rich in color. It just flows with ease. I can't eat tomatoes but this makes me want to give it a go! Nothing like fresh produce. You can't beat it. Wonderfully written:)

I envy your ability to write whimsical poetry about seemingly anything you want. I always struggle with anything that's not prose, but you always find ways to make fun, vivid poems that are spot on. I love those last two lines. The exact thought someone on a high would have. I also love the part about the k9 spectators. So true.

Lucky you! Fresh tomatoes are the absolute Best & you do them proud with your healthy tribute. Love the imagery, flow and great rhyme. It must be so fulfilling to grow them, harvest them and then have them nurture your body. Brava!

UGHHHHHHHH....
I LOVE, LOVE THIS! You find poetry in virtually everything, dear friend. How you bounce around your healthy finely metered thoughts, your obvious preferences - (topping a salad of salmon and greens - bliss absolute!) - said in asides and shouts.. hooray for lycopene.. hands high applauding! Tomatoes are the royalty of garden pleasure.

There is nothing/little else more wonderful than picking own veggies and fruit.. nothing more satisfying than putting them to the nose and inhaling deeeeeply. Who wants French perfume when lots of plum tomatoes, with added cooked baby beetroots and crisp chopped apples are marinaded in best oil, added turmeric (an essential, ) seasoning and a swing of a spoon.. plus - a glug of something in a glass. Lycopene has never been so good. Be quiet, Em and just go, saying.. WONDERFUL..

Loved this, Bgirl, as well as fresh filed tomatoes. I live near the tomato capital of Canada so can get big lovely red ones all fall. Hated picking them as a kid though. Too much work, too little money.

When you want to try
To get a legal high
Have a Lycopene fix
With Barleygirl's tricks'
No needles are needed,
Just red skinned and seeded,
Sun ripened things called tomatoes.
But to get the full strength
You must cook them at length
Served with pasta ,(but never potatoes.)
It is then thickly topped
With cheese and then popped
In the oven for about half an hour
This gives it a crunch and your lycopene lunch
Makes you feel as high as a tower.

NB. please note that I used the US pronounciation, not the the English "Tommarto" sound.
I'm very diplomatic!! (((Hugs)))
