Wistful Holidays

Wistful Holidays

A Poem by barleygirl
"

just thinking back . . .

"

Early December days so chilly and clear
makes no difference if holidays are near
any season sizzles with distinctive cheer
to foraging wild boar and grazing mule deer.

Swirling blade grinds on sharpening steel
feathers flutter over hunted turkey squeal
steamy cauldron dipping for an easy peel
tweezing last pinfeathers with childish zeal.

Off to the garden for twigs of rosemary
as orange juice simmers with fresh cranberry
serving bowls heaped with hearty culinary
pies of pumpkin, rhubarb, mince and cherry.

After several rounds of busting our guts
some of us repent by shaking our butts
a medley of fur friends along for the struts
then resident stylists do makeover haircuts.

Such fuzzy togetherness was bound to end
as a family we were never any good at pretend
it took me years to finally comprehend
for me true family is a wholehearted friend.

Ahhhh, the holiday family gatherings...best and most enjoyable in measured doses. Relatives nurturing each other- yes! Love the rhyme and musicality and homespun-ness of the home and hearth imagery of this vivid poem. You got me again Margie! Love virtually sharing Christmas with you! Xo

Again, you surprise me with a a poem where apparently common events are described in an abundant and colorfull way :)

On 'Fresh-Baked Bread' you were exploring the preparation of food as a sort of ritual, an experience of regeneration through food preparation. Here instead you're focusing on a similar event (act of sharing food), but with different feelings: indeed, even if the event is supposed to be a moment of intimate sharing, your discern an emptyness in the background. It seems you are questioning the true meaning of holidays, looking for a more natural and naive way to celebrate than the modern approach. I like the way you come to the point, first describing the various steps of the party (food preparation, dinner, music/dance) and then wondering about the tru meaning of that.
I can relate with your feeling and therefore I believe your poem has a special value: it provokes a doubt and a good one.
The style is formaly perfect: rhymes and metrics are composed with mastery. Some words made me smile (I did not expect 'butts' :D ) but were all in all a pleasant surprise.

I wish you may find the friend you are looking for ;)

We see all the scene, with distinctive cheer,
You show us all of the down homey charm
We clearly see but we also can hear.
It’s just as if we’re back down on the farm.

A whack with axe, and a dip in the pot,
holiday turkey is ready to pluck.
We see the pumpkin and cranberry lot
Watch as you celebrate all of your luck.

Fur friends join in to the cheers and haircuts,
until ‘togetherness’ starts to grow thin.
It’s time to go home, ‘fore we start with the ‘Buts….
We can do all of this next year again.

The realization we find at to the end
shines light on the truth; a wholehearted friend

I think you realise that when some family member dies, and you don't bother. But your friend dies, and your devastated. Mind you, in some cases. If the dogs funeral was on the same day as a family member. You're going to the dogs funeral.

The voice of experience speaks, and speaks to us all. For many, if not most, a more realistic summation of the holidays. Still, you don't end with a cynical note. Nice wrap up. I like it.

Most people who live long enough will have mixed feelings during the holidays. They'll never quite be the same for me with so many family and friends passed away. It's not all Santa and reindeer for everyone but it's a bit consoling if you can find a true friend to enjoy this time of year with.
