A Chapter by Debbie Barry

Written in 10th grade, a poem about feeling isolated in a crowd.

June 28, 1984

Once an alien,
Now no more,
I lived among people
Not like me.

Now at home
Among the rest,
I spend my time
Adjusting to life.

My life was strange,
Is now common,
Was then apart,
Is now included.

Feelings were different,
Thoughts out of place,
I understood not
The time and the place.

Then I met people
And noticed them, too.
I let me relax
And made many friends.

Now not an alien
Among people of mine.
Now not a stranger
In my own place and time.
