A Chapter by Debbie Barry

Written in 12th grade, a love poem to my then-future first husband.

February 5, 1987

You have my heart.
You have my soul.
On this day of days,
I give you my hand.

I give you my love
For the times of pain.
I give you my love
For the times of joy.

I give you my love
For the times of our lives.
I give you my love,
For I have seen tomorrow.

My heart shall hold us
In pain and rejoicing.
My mind shall lead us
In fortune and suffering.

My soul shall bind us
In despair and renewal.
I promise the future
In the faith of my word.

Our bond will be broken
By no man.

For Andy.
