A Chapter by Debbie Barry

A poem about the end of a long day.

August 10, 1988

I never knew
How much I loved
The feel of a hot shower
Until tonight
When I came in from a mission.
I never felt so dirty,
So tired, or so sticky;
But then, again,
I never worked
So hard to save a life.
I came in dirty and disgruntled.
But I felt so good inside.
I felt good just for trying
My best to save a life.
I never thought the day would come
When a shower would be a blessing,
But maybe that small blessing
Is my reward for what I do.

After an unsuccessful CAP mission in Poughkeepsie, NY.
