"The Incident"

A Story by R. L. Hill

A chocolaty chunk of peanut-buttery perfection was stuck to my front tooth the ENTIRE time I talked with Josh from fifth period. I KNEW there had to be a reason for his posing with me for a pic. As I checked my Facebook, after realizing my embarrassing smile in the mirror of the girl's bathroom, I found myself shared on practically EVERY account of EVERY student who attended Moleville High.

I forever became incorrectly dubbed (since some prize student figured it was chocolate chip rather than Reese's on my teeth) as the Cookie Monster. Not the most brilliant way to begin my freshman year, but it would not really matter anyways. People eventually shortened the nickname to Cookie till it stuck. Even Miss Sanders let it slip in math class. I am not sure which is worse: being called a pet name by a teacher and having the whole class erupt in laughter, OR, having out-embarrassed the guy who called her "Mom" only two weeks ago. Even that pimply-faced Bozo the Clown (Tim has awfully orange hair) was snickering at me during and after "The Incident".

The only person who kept me sane and was able to bring me out of the furthest bathroom stall at lunch was my best friend, Samuel. He was the only person I ever let call me by my full first name: Quinnly. Yes, that is my name. Quinnly Anne Brinks. My mother had an unfortunate addiction to re-runs of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman at the time of my birth, and my father wanted to have his father's name (Lee) represented in some fashion. So, yea, they settled for Quinnly. Anne was my grandma's name and had to be squeezed in somehow - resulting in the worst name of all existence.

I let Sam call me Quinnly because we had known each other forever. Way back when, we used to wear diapers together. Our moms were close friends. He hates when I mention our diaper days. He has it in his head that he is too handsome and manly now for such talk. I do not seem him as anything but Sammy, and actually think it is funny how he clams up now around girls. Even Petunia Brown gets him all tongue-tied which is hillarious because Petunia is not a "looker", if you know what I mean. At least, until the new girl came to town...
