A Poem by Jeff Bresee

I charted once a course to gold

A place wherein I might take hold

Of everything I ever wished

Retire there; enjoy the bliss

But every time I thought that I

Was finally there, I’d stop and try

To take my rest and grab the things

That I expected such to bring

But each time I found to my dread

The land of gold lay still ahead

And on and on this cycle went

Until at last my strength was spent

Which left me standing in despair

Afraid I’d never make it there

Frustrated to the very core

And wondering just what life is for

“Does not this journey have an end?

Perhaps the gold is just pretend”

But then so soft inside my head

The voice of reason spoke and said

“The reason why you can’t arrive:

You want what’s on the other side”

Very Well written I like it.

Excellent work, well said.

Enjoyed this one.....kinda identify with the way the human mind can keep us thinking that happiness is "over there" somewhere....when we get the girl/car/house/job...etc.
Great last lines, and I liked the flow of this one....:)

A flowing, amazing poem. The way it's written really puts the point across, and the imagery is wonderful. I love it, like I always love your poems.

Again, I love your style. As always thoughtful and clear.

This is an amazing poem. It flows incredibly well. There's no need to pronounce anything with a certain emphasis to make it work, it just does.

Wonderful! Like the grass is greener in the end...superb flow and cadence in this work. Great expression of emotion and longing. Thanks for sharing.

I reviewed another one of your poems about five minutes ago, and so far they are so good! I favorited this one too, so I can go back and read it again and again. I have been down lately, and this poem helped heal a few wounds. thank you.

This makes me think of a quote by Martin Luther, which is one of my very favorites: "We are not yet what we shall be, but we are growing toward it, the process is not yet finished, but it is going on, this is not the end, but it is the road." Wisdom written centuries ago, one of those very human revelations, that you echo and depict so effectively here.
