Wonder

Wonder

A Poem by RWE

I wander

 under a late winter sun,

 weave between naked oaks,

 wet leaves under my muddy boots.

I hear Little Turkey Creek below;

 whirlpools, waterfalls of melted snow,

And, a rare eagle, screaming above the trees,

 stretched out, gliding in a February breeze.

Oh, dear, I wish you were here,

 or somewhere near,

Perhaps in the cabin by the pond

 over the next hill or just beyond,

Snuggled near a stoned-wrapped fire

 where soon I’d join you and retire,

Socked feet up, fresh coffee in hand;

 imagined joy, something unplanned.

Until I find my way, until the next crest

 I’ll wander these woods in my quest;

A solitary hunt for the mourning dove,

 not to kill but discover proof of love,

Beneath the stalking eagle, two gamebirds;

 Peace in nature… coos… unspoken words.

I wonder

 under a boundless painted sky

 what love I might enjoy if only I try

To wipe away the tears…

 forgo all doubts and fears.

This I’ve wondered too many years.

First draft. Intentional lack of rhyming first stanza. Intentional different uses of "wander" and "wonder." Feedback sincerely appreciated. Thanks.

A stark, solitary image contrasts with the effervescence and warmth of this poem. Eloquent language and vivid, sparkling images of nature throughout...”a solitary hunt for the mourning dove” in a quest for “proof of love”- so reminiscent of Walden Pond...unique form and rhyme with the cascading flow and cadence of a “waterfall”- and just as refreshing. “I wander” and “I wonder” beautifully juxtaposed. A cozy “stone-wrapped fire” for two is so inviting...Love this my friend!:)

this immediately whisked me away into the solitude of that cabin in the woods along with the emotions of longing love and what ifs. great wording and imagery painting a picture of regret. i'm a Thoreau junkie, so can't help but think of his cabin in the woods at Walden as i read. more than enjoyable ...

I really like the wander/ wonder aspect of your words, it lends to the overall journey of the piece and has an unhurried feel to it. These journeys without destination give us the time to ponder who we are and who we want to be. We may not know its destination, but we will recognise it when we get there.

Thanks very much for your review. I appreciate you taking time to read my work.
Your words create a rapture of scenes, rich, varied, emotional. Want to lie back, close my eyes, imagine, listen, inhale, 'share the moment', so to speak. But then, I have to re. read and now.. now i sense the whole experience has a vast veil of sadness. Why is it that even the most beautiful experiences can be diluted by what's missing

Thank you, Kelly.
i wonder similarly...but most of my trees stand alone now...but like me, they had a good life, saw a lot of things and weathered many others.
