After Dark - Chapter Forty

A Chapter by lawrence bear

cry in the dark

Mary-Anne trembled in fear as she heard the animal, sniff the air. She heard it rumbling as it circled the wagon. It was dark, and tiny bits of white clouds shone from the moon. She swallowed air as its claws scratched the walls; it was on its hind legs. She was surprised as she heard it snort inside the wagon, its head was inside sniffing the air, she began to tremor and it scratched the walls hard as it climbed in. It snarled as it fully set in the wagon. Her hands desperately felt for something to defend herself with, anything.

The beast crept closer sniffing and snorting, then her hand felt an object, like a lantern, she clutched it and quickly tossed it out the wagon. It crashed on the ground and the beast leapt out after it. Mary-Anne sprouted from her hiding spot and jumped out and ran. The beast roared behind her and her hair stood on end. She ran as fast as her feet could take her. She heard the beast crash through the wagon and chase after her. Its footsteps trampled the forest floor hard in a gallop. Her hands in front of her, she pushed the brush aside and nearly tripped. She stopped and pressed her back against the tree holding her breath.

The beast roared in the dark, and when she heard it running by. She pressed on, in the opposite direction. Her heart drummed wildly on her chest, her sides were sore and she was out of breath. She stopped again and listened for it. It roared again, and it bounced off the trees all around her. She didn’t know where to run, where it was coming from. The rumble from the beast sounded closer, and it edged closer. Mary-Anne heard the animal's growl in front of her; she turned slowly and kept watch. And as she was about to run, hot air from its nostrils blew on her face. Her heart pounded, she was frozen with fear before… she SCREAMED.
