By the Hand

By the Hand

A Poem by Dave Brown
"

West Coast ways

"

Looking at the blank canvas before me

As I stood on a rugged West Coast shore

Was it light or shadows or both

A theme seemed to magically appear

Like a wave flowing cross the surface

With Nature’s colors dramatically displayed

Trees and rocks flowed boldly together

Past images of decaying Native icons

The theme then seemed to convert to

Driftwood beaches and wide-open skies

To the wild state of the natural places

With strong colors shining all through

Many brushes alongside an easel

Oil paint spilling where wildly mixed

An umbrella to ward off hot sunlight

Reaching up from my once blank canvas

I dipped one brush into wet paint

It seemed to have a mind of its own

And where it led my hand across the surface

A West Coast painting had wonderfully grown

Read and re-read. This is a fantastic statement on the wildly flowing, fluid beauty of the West Coast! And yet again about how Art takes shape on its own. I could go on and on as I could read so many things here. Kudos!
