The Herd

The Herd

A Chapter by Dave Brown

The rider watched the dust cloud

As it was moving to’ard him

The ground was shaking

Wide cloud made the sun dim

Wild horses were running

Across the desert’s dry ground

The great dust cloud was nearing

With a deep rumbling sound

He rode back through the arroyo

Then up onto a plateau

His horse danced uneasily

Watching the wild horse’s flow

The stallion was leading

Past the plateau they sat

The wind and the dust cloud

Pushed on his wide hat

Through the creek bed

There the herd slowed to a trot

Where green grass still grew

They stopped at that spot

He watched till they settled

Then pulled the reins away

Relieved to see the harsh desert

Had let them live one more day
