A Chapter by Dave Brown

She was felt as much as seen

As the thinning ice vibrated

The fate of her great white body

Now, even more underrated

This time, the baby seal

Was taken as it slept

One mother fed her starved offsprings

The other mother wept

As great huge glaciers crash

The pole’s ice caps are shrinking

As they melt, sea’s rise

And coastal lands are sinking

The huge walrus finds no ice

High above clifftop

And to reach down below

It becomes a killing drop

Skies are blue and trees are green

The great orb still daily humming

But because of a naïve mankind

Change is surely coming

I fear the only solution at this point is for man to become extinct hopefully before killing off all of the other life forms so something more intelligent can take over like sea slugs

Moving, nicely rhymed and well told. The last words are ominous, and, I fear, true.

thanks John
unfortunately they are already here and lots more coming
Last evening I watched the documentary "Trail of Tears" (about kicking Native Americans out of their homes & lands, even after changing to live "civilized" like whites insisted). The parallel between that (still stuck in my craw this morning) & your poem is startling. Seals & walruses are dealing with the aftermath of human greed & disregard, not to mention polar bears, as old people get swept away by covid becuz none of these living entities is f*****g entitled to live, ya know! It's more important to drive around in our big gas-guzzling pickup trucks with a rack of guns & tearing up the land as we call ourselves "outdoorspeople"! I'm sorry. I think my jadedness hit epic proportions, reading this just now (((HUGS))) Fondly (albeit sadly), Margie
