A Chapter by Dave Brown

When penetrating winds

Blow extra cold

And there’s rarely protection

For the young or old

With constant freezing weather

Becoming a centerfold

When the unfortunates

Can barely recover

From sleeping in cold doorways

With the flimsiest of cover

When a concrete curbside

Is where you comfortably nestle

And a sled filled with gifts

Is just a foreign vessel

When scavenged belongings

Are soaked and of no use

When a wish that poverty

Would take a long truce

With thoughts of comfort

Being completely obtuse

When the soup kitchens

Have an endless long line

When just existing

Is borderline

Then, once again

It must be Christmas time

Beautiful yet tragic at the same time. To be in that position in what is regarded by many as "the most wonderful time of the year" must be the absolute worst. My wife and I have a tradition of making hearty soup (last year was creamy potato and ham), driving to where the downtrodden nestle on their curbs, and give them a nice warm meal with a small Christmas card wishing them well. Brings me to tears every time we do it. Thank you for this poem, it reinforced my drive to try and do even better this year.

There aren't enough people such as you
Your efforts will be very appreciated
Too sad... that even our Country has not taken the time to build Shelters for the Homeless.
Millions of dollars spent on Campaigns and celebrating the Victory in January... when the Money could have been used for "Saving People" instead of relying on Tax Money, and then turning around and living like a very Wealthy person with a "forever" salary. (That should be changed). It should be a Job with a yearly salary.
truly, Pat
