Flat Earth Flummox

Flat Earth Flummox

A Chapter by Dave Brown
"

"

While digging through flat earth

Halfway through, my shovel broke

Basically, showing that shovel quality

Has become a bit of a joke

It used to be straight grain oak

Designed to last a lifetime or two

But with the stuff used these days

How did I expect to dig right through

Most junk comes from China

And we buy it because it’s cheap

And from Chinese crap to quality

Is a fairly expensive leap

I went to Italy, I went to Spain

Throughout Germany by train

Looking, looking for tough shovels

But not expecting to see one again

While watching some wandering elephants

I wandered out onto a Mongolian ledge

And before I knew what had happened

I had fallen off flat earth’s edge

Funny, how as you fall off earth

Digging through seems less of a concern

And the real unfortunate thing was

It was illegal to do a U-turn

I like it. My only concern is he use of “ again “. Depending on regional dialect it could be pronounced as a-gain or a-gan. Other than that even with the altering of the rhyme scheme it still comes across as a humorous and entertaining read.

Heeler/terrier mix, but mostly cuddly.
Remember when we repaired things Dave? Now we just throw them away.

When the silent spring finally comes
and all the birds are in a museum
We'll sell our birthright for a song
so children can pay to see them

Then all the beauty will be gone
as our grandchildren run out to play
Not under blue or across the green
but in the trash from yesterday

You are keeping us suitably amused. Your poems are fun, but you are dead right about all the crap that comes out of China. Not known for quality, just mass produced and mainly plastic. Have a good weekend Dave. Glorious weather here.

Columbus ventured forth to find India. You ventured forth to find shovels. Itineraries are everything.

Thanks Carlos, always appreciate a great response
Once you fall off a cliff ( not sure about this) this you're gone! No u turns, but did you ever find that shovel before you fell off the ledge of flat earth??? Very clever poem of funny quirks that only you could think up.
By the way what's it like to be falling????
Best, B.
