Last House

Last House

A Chapter by Dave Brown

Palmetto Exterminators - 12 Days of Christmas - Day 4

Finally arriving at the very last house

Way in the corner, Santa saw a wee mouse

It was so soft, with tiny feet and cute ears

But in its brown eyes, there were many tears

Santa’s heart broke, when he saw that mouse cry

Wanting no sadness, where Xmas reindeer’s each fly

Picking him up to cuddle him near

With a soft hanky, wiped away each sad tear

Small Martin explained how he loved everyone

But like an unwanted germ was given the shun

It seemed like he’d always lived in crawlspaces

Shunned and suffering in dirty dank places

With Sun almost rising, Santa had to depart

But with little Martin he just couldn’t part

So, with an offer straight from his soft soul

He invited tiny Martin up to the North Pole

When Reindeers now sit round the campfire at night

Martin Mouse now adds a special delight

Hopping from antler to antler, never missing a spot

And has been adopted as their special mascot

All the new toys built on a small scale

Are built by Martin down to each tiny detail

No longer chased from each place he would go

He’s found a happy home, deep in Arctic snow

He has met a sweet mousette and they tied the knot

Their children all happy with the job that they got

In Santa’s packages of computers worldwide

Each also, now has a new mouse inside

Next Christmas on Santa’s high glide

On Rudolph’s red nose, Martin will ride

At the houses with no chimney hole

It’s through the keyholes, Martin will go

If you see a small mouse near Christmas trees

You might just offer, a fresh piece of cheese

He could have with him, a sled full of toys

For a world full of waiting girls and boys
