A Poem by Robert Trakofler
"

Rumbling ramble of raucous ruckus

"

Photo synthesis

In the immortal words of Patrick Henry

Give me liberty or give me death!

Or was it the dead Kennedys…

Give me convenience or give me death?

This must have been what Mr. Heston

Was thinking of when he said…

I’ll give you my gun when you pry it from

My cold dead hands?

Dear Mr. Dawkins your selfish gene theory

Is alive and clicking!

For these are the days that will live on in infamy…

as the mass meme luminosity

And sound bite intellectuals

Rally forth secure in the unearned wisdom

Cleverly packaged in bright colored boxes

with pretty pictures and fancy labels

wrapped with cellophane and tamper proof blister packs

packed from blisters bled in the imported and outsourced

and most unwelcomed shores

Adorning the gas station convenience store shelves!

Kilroy is blushing on the bathroom walls next to the

Discarded newspaper.

The crinkled headline with armed men storming the state capitals

Holding up “give me liberty or give me death” signs

Scrawled on the backs of used Purex shipping box cardboard

And off in the distance I hear Patrick Henry crying!

Closely behind the anti vax sisters all bellow from behind there masks

so secure in the knowledge of the government plan

to make their children autistic and now virus laden

Off in the distance…

Mr. Dawkins is consoling Edward Jenner as

Galileo goes back into house arrest.

And the flat earthers cheer!

And a stunned Goebbels gazes in disbelief

And the dead cold hands of Mr. Heston

Drops his gun

For surely the many who have bled

For your rights

Had this in mind…

Yes rally for your rights brothers!

To go to the cheesecake factory

To let your children die for commerce

And suffer the elderly for your

Selfish haircut vanity

Yes indeed

For these are the times that try men’s souls

Wow, Robert. This is a scathing take on the current moment. So much encompassed here. I'm not going to say a lot here, because I came to review your other poem about the waves, but did want to applaud the thought thread running through this. It's not a great moment to watch unfolding around us. The idea of truth is so subjective at this point that I think it's possible for people to believe anything if they want it badly enough.

I quit Facebook in 2016 because of the way politics started permeating every conversation. But it still haunts me when I have conversations about things seen and read there that are completely nonsensical but nevertheless accepted as truth. I keep hoping sense will prevail at some point. I'm not giving up hope yet.

I wonder if it's mere serendipity that has me reading THIS poem on a morning of news that Roger Stone has been pardoned? Brilliant pertinent writing: "as the mass meme luminosity and sound bite intellectuals" . . . I really go bizerk on Facebook these days, the long convoluted arguments (how can you argue crazy? it makes me crazy just to watch it!) between my friends (being in an area with lots of rednecks & lots of liberals) are enuf to make me want to go take a crap outside & wipe with dry grass. Don't ask me what that means. That's exactly how I feel about these times. What the hell does this all mean? Your poem illuminates the idiot levels we've lately reached in our public discourse (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

First off, ever since this nasty little bug reared its head, there are more 'experts' crawling out of the woodwork and offering their opinions, than you can shake a stick at. Fact is though, no-one really has the answer, and particularly not, the goodly number of so-called world leaders, who whilst keeping a very keen eye on the numbers, (the economic ones,) are simply continuing to spout the same old political rhetoric.

As for the even bigger idiots running around protesting about the infringements of their civil liberties and rights, (and not just in the USA,) they are probably the same idiots thronging the beaches and beauty spots and not giving a damn about other folk.

This is absolutely top class fare Robert.

Yes, Close to the Edge Robert and balance is at a near critical point when it comes to home and world truths.. I say leave it up to the politicians, after all, they know best dont they and always tell the truth ... pretty sure the edge of the world is just around the corner... this was just cryin out to be writ... please note, no cheeks were harmed when I stuck my tongue in :)

LOL I love you Nev:)
Now this should be available to the world to read...not only a societal purge but a catharsis of absolute power within itself...leading by example...what was and is it all for? Modernity has shed no skin to evolve, times have changed without humanity aware of it let alone accepting of it and the storm has not abated though the masses see only sunshine...positivity is a choice so they say but it gets harder each passing hour to turn the tide of frustration, inaction and apathetic sorrow...excellent poetry Robert...truly what words were invented for :)

Yes, yes and yes to your learned and articulate rant my friend! I see a Krispy Kre-ME (emphasis on ME) mentality rising to swallow whatever rationality ever existed anywhere. Your tirade is spot-on B.B.R., and your references are so abundantly witty. How shallow and myopic it is to let our children and elderly be culled for the sake of convenience, fun, entertainment, fractious vanity...you are so right. I fear Covid will rise in spades to deflate this absolutely daft occasion, this vainglory, this Mad Hatter's Tea Party. Your satirical lines are genius and prove sadly that these may in fact be, the last days and times that will try men's souls. Undisputedly, we face the worst of times. Thank you for your bravery and your honesty in lyrically calling it out and taking this very laudable poetic stand. Kudos indeed my friend!

This is such a passionate write that reflects so well our current environment, with well placed sarcasm woven throughout. I'm certainly no expert on infectious diseases but when there's one out there that's killing people at the rate it is, you can be damn sure I'm taking the cautious path.

powerful words Mr B as you dissect the conspiracy a******s , armed militia having street parties and demanding their liberty back, as they storm the Capitol, that is several f*****g scary thoughts rolled into one, I think Mr Henry and Mr Biafra, would enjoy this one, maybe not the underlying propaganda s**t that others preach, but definitely your message, keep on rocking in the too drunk to f**k world, that we live in these days, respect my friend,

Robert, this is a history lesson masquerading as a poem! So many references to historic quotes, historic figures, other times and places. What is more important in life? Health or a haircut? Well, the answer would seem to be obvious, but not so for the ones storming the capital sans masks. History books will not be kind when they write about 2020.....but your poem should be the preface for the book! Lydi**

Is there power in refusing to cater to popular tastes, and is this a type of agency that poetry can have? War is hell. And since we're on the subject of music, Little Richard at the end of his life, denounced homosexuality. Is pain part of poetry or music as a ritual of escape? Or, as you have suggested my friend, have we all just become so completely tribal one sided? Frankly, I would rather old movies instead of the peridium of radiant energy anyday of the week..lol.
