A Story by Mr. D

It's a necessity, just like many other things in this world.

Have you ever sat on your front or back porch at your house or place of residence, and just sat and listened to the rain patter against the ground or listened to it clang against the tin roofs that some of you may have? It’s great, isn’t it?

Rain is a great thing sometimes, and sometimes it can be devastating in terms of flooding. But like it or not rain, and as I said in one of my previous writings, money, are necessary in this world. People complain daily about the rain and wish it would go away when it comes, and then when it does go away for a long time, they complain because it isn’t raining, crops are dying, and this, that, and the other.

But I much prefer rainy days to sunny ones, especially in summer. When it doesn’t rain in summer, and the sun burns and blazes overhead, it’s always too hot outside. Or in winter, it’s always too cold and you end up having three or more feet of snow on the ground and can’t go anywhere. I hate summer and I hate winter, and I’m not too fond of spring or autumn.

But anyhow, without rain there would be no crops to send to the grocery stores, farmer’s markets, etc. The ground wouldn’t even be conducive to growing any of these things, which means millions would lose their farms, people would starve and go hungry, and it would be worldwide chaos, pandemonium, and insanity.

But have you ever actually stopped and taken time to enjoy the rain? You say to me, “Mr. D, you have no idea how painful and annoying it is to have to wash my car again every time it rains.” No, you’re right. I don’t have any idea how painful that is. I don’t own a car, and I don’t want one. Too many expenses for not enough return. I digress, however.

But rain isn’t a bad thing. In fact, one of my favorite pastimes is to watch the YouTube channel, Virtual Railfan, and search out cams on which it’s raining in the city for that day. In fact, I enjoy it so much, I usually won’t even watch for trains unless it’s raining in a specific city or town that day. I’ve been somewhat spoiled.

Rain isn’t just necessary for crops and the like. Animals need it to drink. We need it to drink from wells, aquifers, and other water sources. People need it to wash their cars, to take showers, baths, and maintain proper hygiene, and to wash their clothes and such. Yes, believe it or not, folks, if you don’t use city water, you’re on a well, and rain has to fill that well up every now and then. Know how much it costs to dig a new one? No, and you probably don’t want to.

But I use jugs of water for things like that.” Do you? That comes from rainfall too. Some of it does, anyway. Some of it also comes from other sources which...well, you won’t want to know. Good thing we have an immune system.

But what happens if the rain doesn’t come? Lakes dry up. Rivers dry up. Water sources dry up. You can live without food for a while, but water? Only a few days at best. You’ll shrivel up and die without it, and so will the animals you eat for food on most days. Plants too. We all know this, but I reiterate it because it IS an important point.

But I get it. Rain inconveniences you. You wanted to go somewhere like the swimming pool, and rainfall, thunder, and lightning stop you from doing so. Or maybe there IS no thunder and lightning, and you go for a rainy swim (it’s great fun, by the way.) Or you wanted to go out on the lake and fish for the day, and your plans get subverted when you see those dark gray clouds.

But whether you love rain or you absolutely loathe it, you cannot deny the necessity of it. Perhaps it’s time that you rain haters out there give it a chance, eh? After all, you’ll be putting up with it until you die. Might want to cultivate a relationship with it. You have to if you’re a farmer. Rain’s not a bad thing, folks, and you have no control over when it falls and when it doesn’t. But like many other things in this world, we all need it in more ways than you could possibly imagine.
