One With the Trail

One With the Trail

A Poem by barleygirl
"

how some nights can be . . .

"

Damp pungent dew point suddenly transcends
momma moon somersaults as saturn descends
slapped by sharp scents the lone chaparral sends
any hope of further slumber gruffly suspends.

Wispy golden glow in a veil she hits the trail
hoping to swap some gouges for her holy grail
skip saccharin sagas from history’s fairy tale
cunning coyote pitches a lunar ridgeline wail.

Paw pads caress muted crimson trail sand
hungering to gobble up the night air firsthand
branches fling lunar silhouettes o’er the land
prickly pears decorate a lichen-crusted stand.

Becoming one with the path, one with the night
the dark midnight trail is her toilsome birthright
wandering the way with intuition a pilot light
traversing a tormented trail whets her appetite.

Each bend is memorized so she runs a brisk clip
every single night she does a different round trip
nothing else under the sun brings such fellowship
on the blackest invisible trail she has her lightship.

At 3 am I awoke suddenly when the night temperature reached
the dew point, which released a wave of pungent aromas from
the chaparral-covered ridges nearby.

this poem reminds me of how I feel today. not a big fan of the heat these days...
This is the hottest week of the hottest month of the year the humidity is so high it feels like you could swim the air today. I mention this cause Saturday I have to attend a "barn wedding" and true to my prediction it is going to be almost 100 degrees:) Oh I hate trendy hipster weddings but I have to go cause I'm that uncle! Now the call from the bunny on such a night would be more of a dis-pleasured whelp yip and yelp

I could almost sense the aromas and the activity in the night in this nice rhyming piece. To wake to such things cannot be bad.

Margie - I love the picture you paint with your writing. Not just the visual images, but the sensory ones as well. I sat back and reread this and along with the plant life, that you describe so vividly I can smell the aromas coming from them. Thank you so much for your writing.

Take care - Dave

“Becoming one with the path, one with the night..the dark midnight trail is her toilsome birthright”- beautiful, perfect, living image in poetry. Felt like I was reading something timeless from Native American lore when I was reading this dear Margie. Wild, nocturnal, primal, free, fearless-yes! The skillful, penultimate night-huntress. The rhythm , rhyme, alliteration and sheer coyote-channeling of this poem mesmerizes. You capture the essence of this animal completely. Absolutely loved this!

I pictured it all in my mind's eye.....I could see the dog running through the woods in the dark and yet never getting lost...as if there is an innate GPS! I could smell the night air. I love that you called the moon, "momma". As always, the rhyming is just great. Lydi**

What a beautiful, transcendent fragrance that floods the world at night! I could only vaguely remember such chaparral scents while backpacking through Yosemite. There is something so dreamish even in waking then... the winds arousing such joy and mystery in the mind. Thank you for sharing this magic!

We are about to be hit with the hottest days of the summer. mid to high 90's...humidity making it feel like the 100's...courtesy of Barry pushing hot air up from the Gulf. And all along I thought all the hot air was in D.C.
Should be over in a couple of days...thankfully.
