Tree Bark and Fresh Air

Tree Bark and Fresh Air

A Poem by barleygirl
"

survival 101 . . .

"

How the tender-footed thrive
in such anaconda-infested bogs
floating upon a jaunty canopy
beyond the poison-dart frogs.

All I need is tree bark and fresh air
dewdrops clustering in a notch
not toasty nor frosty, no extremes
a wistful welcoming tree crotch.

Greedy predators in a scuffle below
all muffled by tree bark and fresh air
they don’t even know I’m way up here
with a rainforest of bliss to spare.

Lately I’ve learned to live on less
so I’m not feeling the dire pinch
everywhere I look, a ton of abundance
as the lowly worms squirm and clinch.

Orchids are very resilient flowers; never in abundance but always thriving on their own when the conditions are right. That they can grow out of a tree branch while all the chaos of the animal kingdom occurs below is a marvellous achievement. I like the "anaconda-infested bog" reference....now that is a frightening animal! For many of us at this time, living like the orchid is the best way to survive. Much enjoyed poem, this one! :))

I could just imagine this amazing thing thriving and surviving and growing higher than the rest. It is really amazing how some things grow in the rainforest. I loved how your poem, especially how you captured that sense of something beautiful where it's not expected. It really is a beautiful thing.

The action happens up high in the canopy, where monkeys holler and scream. I always go somewhere I shouldn’t when I read your writing. But that’s a good thing; it makes me wriggle and jive. What a write!

As ever always you create pictures in the reader's mind but here, for me, is the secret inner side of you.. the fragile Margie who peers into the shadows far more than she often admits. You know full well that even in the dark, there are chinks of light. Even in the depth of foliage or alternatively, spaces devoid of apparent life, there is beauty because in reality Beauty isn't inevitably obliterated by ugliness or the lack of what most think are essentials. Right now, am sat, like everyone else in the midst of the viral horrors.. and yet, here i am looking at the picture of a beautiful orchid.. there as it might well be for real. Margie, maybe because of my mood, maybe because of yours when you wrote it, but i see so much in this post, tis special, precious. multi-faceted.
