Best of the Horror Underground  April 20, 2009 - May 20, 2009

Reading and Deliberating

Details

Ok, here's the deal: I'm in the process of starting up a small press publishing house. Fetid Press will spotlight up and coming authors whose work stands firmly outside what is generally considered to be the norm. We feel that individuality, creativity, and a unique perspective beat out formulaic clones of the current bestseller any day of the week. In the future, we will be opening for novel submissions but right now we are working on an anthology to launch the press. Our website isn't quite ready to launch yet, but I wanted to give you guys first dibs on inclusion in this book.

Best of the Horror Undergound will be an anthology consisting entirely of previously published short stories in the 3,000 to 6,000 word range. However, we are only looking for work that has appeared in small press magazines or web-based publications: if your story had been published in Cemetery Dance, for example, then props to you . . . however, that market is a little too well known for this anthology. Stories that are unique and fresh have the best chance of making it into the book, so make sure to send only your most original pieces.

We are seeking non-exclusive anthology reprint rights. Unfortunately as this is the first book for a very small press, payment can be made only in the form of one contributor's copy at the present time. Depending on the success of the anthology, however, there is a chance that a contributor bonus may be paid to authors at a later date.

Stories should be submitted in either .doc .rtf or .odt formats. We ask for standard formatting in Courier 12 pt font with the author's contact information in the upper left hand corner of the first page and word count in the upper right. Also, please include a cover letter in the body of the email with a brief bio (around 250 words should suffice) and the name/date/issue of where your story was originally published.

Until the website is launched, please send all submissions to [email protected] with Anthology: in the subject line. Rejected manuscripts will be replied to via a form letter; those held for further consideration will be notified once a final decision has been made. As of this writing, there is no set deadline: we are basically accepting submissions until the anthology has been filled. However, please ensure that you have the right to submit your story before doing so. With most smell-press publications, this usually isn't a problem but please check your original contract just to make sure.
