I've always thought of poetry as a precision tool rather than a blunt instrument. Writers often fail when they try a grandiose subject, and the poetry is less powerful because of rambling lines and trite language. When a writer selects a tiny sliver of the bigger picture, the resulting message can blow the reader away.
