Research or Know What You're Writing About

A little lesson on researching before you start writing anything.

One thing that I have noticed that some people do is that they will just sit down and start writing about something because an idea hit them. Well, I feel the need to stress the importance of researching what you are going to write about before you start writing unless it is something that you know about first hand.

I've lived in Oregon most of my life. More specifically, Eugene Oregon. If I were to write a story based on a place right here and now without doing any research about the place, I would have a much easier time writing a story that took place in Eugene versus somewhere I've never been or even only been once. If you know your subject matter you are simply going to write a better story. And if you don't want to write about something you know about, research what you are going to write about before you even sit down to write. Google is a great way to do this as you can learn almost anything by just going to Google.

An personal example of this is that I am currently writing a story that is set in Alaska. Well, I have never been there so I have no idea what it is like other than what I've seen from pictures and what I've been told. I know that there are a lot of mountains and it snows, etc. However, I didn't know exactly what kind of wildlife live there and I wanted to incorporate that into the story, so what did I do? I typed "What kind of wildlife live in Alaska?" and it gave me the exact answers I needed.

Trust me when I tell you that this is something worth doing. Not only does it make you look like a better writer, but it makes you seem knowledgeable and it adds more depth and believability to your writing.

At the moment I am in graduate school and writing a dissertation on totalitarianism and its impact on humanity. I can say that in writing a research, especially one as large as a dissertation, it is very important to systematically write and read a lot of literature. I often hear about this from writers from the EduBirdie company, with whom I very often collaborate lately.

THANKS 4 THE ADVICE, BECuz i'm wring a fiction story about the army and I thought i didn't need to do research... u know, becuz it 's fiction, but I guess i need to, to make it look better.
